Since 2006, the Vets Group has provided a forum to allow for the education of veterans, members of the community, including persons of limited means. Such educational topics have included Access to Capital, Credit Repair and Reporting, Financial Management, Identify Theft, and Banking Basics. We initially started working with the NAACP-DC Chapter in partnership with the Bank of America. Each month for a 2-year period, we would recruit 25 to 50 persons to participate in the financial literacy seminars conducted by a Bank of America Financial Analyst. Since 2004, we have also worked similarly with the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Washington DC District Office and its Office of Veterans Business Development. During our weekly Federal Procurement Training Classes that we conducted for 4 years out of the DC Business Resource Center, once a month, a loan specialist from the SBA would provide a seminar on Access to Capital, Loan Products, and Financial Management, all towards building and managing a better business. In addition, at least twice a year through 2011, we either hosted an event for the SBA or we had them send a representative to participate in one of our other outreach events. Last year we participated in 42 events; distributed info materials to over 4,000 veterans and their family members; conducted 14 seminars and workshops; 4 computer classes; and counseled 305 veterans. From 2009-2010, through the Vets Group and our Veterans Service Organization called Nabvets (National Association for Black Veterans), the Consumer Action Agency (CA) officially entered into a partnership agreement with us, creating a national capacity to mutually provide access, manpower, and resources to offer MoneyWi$e financial educational materials and trainings at various national events that provide a forum on African American and minority veterans’ issues. (1) National Day of Honor for Blacks & Minorities of WWII – Philadelphia, May 23rd; Since our partnership with Consumer Action Agency, we have worked with CA’s dynamic Outreach staff to Help Us Help educate Veterans, their families and other grassroots agencies that service veterans on the MoneyWi$e curriculum. The MoneyWi$e trainers and information pamphlets have served as a tremendous resource in our mission to help veterans to better understand financial management and to become better financially literate in an effort to improve their lives and the lives of their families.
